Paul Scholes: 'Wayne Rooney should play in midfield for England'

Paul Scholes believes that Roy Hodgson would be wise to use Wayne Rooney in midfield against Switzerland on Monday.

Paul Scholes has claimed that Wayne Rooney should be used as a midfielder by England manager Roy Hodgson in the Euro 2016 qualifier against Switzerland.

The England captain scored the only goal of the game on Wednesday night as the hosts struggled to a 1-0 win over Norway at Wembley, and that performance has proven to Scholes that Hodgson's side are lacking a midfielder with the passing qualities of Rooney.

"It is a radical solution and one I would propose just for the Switzerland qualifier on Monday, but I would play Wayne Rooney in midfield," the former Manchester United and England midfielder revealed in his column for The Independent.

"This is a not an argument to say Wayne is not a top striker. His record says that he is and, in an ideal world, I would have two Waynes: one to hit those passes from deep and another to get on the end of them.

"He is the best passer in the team, and he can play that midfield role better than anyone."

Jordan Henderson and Jack Wilshere started in the centre of midfield against Norway, with Raheem Sterling and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain being asked to provide support for the forwards.
