Former Manchester United youngster Robbie Savage has claimed that Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers has the credentials to manage the Red Devils in the future.

Rodgers enjoyed a hugely successful spell with Celtic between 2016 and 2019 before taking the Leicester job, and the Foxes are being tipped to challenge for a Champions League spot this season.

United, on the other hand, have made their worst start to a top-flight campaign since 1989-90, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's position as manager already said to be under threat.

Savage has insisted that Solskjaer should be given time to make his mark at Old Trafford, but the pundit has selected Rodgers as a potential future manager of the 20-time English champions.

"Brendan Rodgers is leading Leicester City back into the Champions League – and he is a future Manchester United manager," Savage wrote in his column for The Mirror.

"Don't get me wrong: When I say Rodgers is destined for high office at United, I am not saying Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should be sacked. I am not in favour of football's hiring-and-firing culture, and Solskjaer deserves time.

"But I've been so impressed by the job Rodgers has done since he took over at the King Power eight months ago that I'm convinced Leicester can finish in the top four.

"I repeat: I am not advocating that Solskjaer is removed from his job at Old Trafford. He deserves to be given more scope to rebuild that squad. But when the time is right, and United are looking for their next manager to play fluent, progressive football, Rodgers – not Mauricio Pochettino, who was first choice when Jose Mourinho was sacked last season – would be my pick."

Rodgers managed United's bitter rivals Liverpool between June 2012 and October 2015, winning 50% of his 166 matches in charge of the Merseyside club.
