Jose Mourinho questions David de Gea's new Manchester United contract

Jose Mourinho questions whether David de Gea's new long-term contract at Manchester United constituted good business for the club.

Jose Mourinho has expressed doubt over whether David de Gea's new long-term contract constituted a good piece of business for Manchester United.

The 27-year-old keeper, following over a year of negotiations, penned a long-term contract until 2023 with the option to extend for another year earlier this week.

De Gea's new deal, which is thought to include a wage package upwards of £300,000 a week, makes him the world's highest-paid goalkeeper.

Speaking on Sky Sports Super Sunday about the new contract, Mourinho said: "The moment where he signed his huge contract is a moment where I don't think United needs to pay as much as that to have him. One or two years ago he had the world after him and, in this moment, where he has signed his incredible contract, I think the majority of the big doors are closed.

"Real Madrid's door is closed - they don't need to sign a goalkeeper after Thibaut Courtois. Barcelona's door is closed because of the young and fantastic Marc-Andre ter Stegen. PSG is closed - they've just signed Keylor Navas, who is a very good goalkeeper.

"I don't see United under pressure because De Gea is going to disappear. Who is going to pay him these numbers?"

De Gea famously came within moments of completing a transfer to Real Madrid in 2015, only for the move to fall thorough amid issues over processing documents on time.

The Spaniard's first game in United colours since penning the new deal ended in a scathing 2-0 defeat at the hands of West Ham United on Sunday.
