Manchester United confirm Emilio Alvarez departure

Manchester United confirm that Spanish goalkeeping coach Emilio Alvarez has left the club.

Manchester United have confirmed that goalkeeping coach Emilio Alvarez has left the club with immediate effect.

The Spaniard mentored David de Gea at Atletico Madrid before following his countryman to United in 2016.

Alvarez's relationship with De Gea is said to have been key in keeping the goalkeeper at Old Trafford in recent seasons, but the 47-year-old has now left the 20-time English champions in search of pastures new.

"Manchester United confirms that Emilio Alvarez is leaving the club," read a club statement. "Emilio joined as goalkeeper coach in 2016 and has been instrumental in developing and coaching the first team goalkeepers during his time in Manchester."

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer added: "I would like to thank Emilio for all his help and hard work since my return to the club. We all wish him well for the future."

According to the Daily Mail, Alvarez's methods have been questioned in the wake of De Gea's disappointing form, which has seen the 28-year-old lose his spot as Spain's number one.

United will attempt to return to winning ways in the Premier League when they welcome Arsenal to Old Trafford on Monday night.
