Phil Jones has insisted that he sees his long-term future at Manchester United as a central defender.

The 20-year-old, who joined the Red Devils from Blackburn Rovers in a £16m summer 2011 switch, has mainly been used at right-back or in midfield by manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Reports have linked the Old Trafford outfit with a move for a new centre-half in January, but Jones is confident he can be the mainstay of United's defence in the future.

"I've always said that my favourite position and the one I feel most comfortable in is centre-half," he told the club's official website.

"But if playing in different positions helps me become a better player then that's great.

"If I am asked to play in a certain situation then I will play there because I enjoy playing football."

Injuries have limited Jones to just seven United appearances this season.
