Anthony Martial netted an 83rd-minute equaliser as Manchester United came from a goal down to draw 1-1 with West Ham United in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon.

Dimitri Payet had sent the visitors into a second-half lead at Old Trafford, but Martial netted seven minutes from time to leave the pair needing a replay to determine who marches on to the semi-finals.

Louis van Gaal reinstated Jesse Lingard to his lineup following a European suspension, but Juan Mata missed out through a ban of his own. Michael Carrick also returned to skipper the team from central midfield, while it was Martial and Ander Herrera that made up the three behind Marcus Rashford.

As for West Ham, James Collins and James Tomkins both missed out through injury, while Sam Byram was cup-tied. Winston Reid made a timely return to centre-back though, while Andy Carroll was picked to lead the line for the visitors, who entered the match off the back of four straight wins.

Marouane Fellaini and Lingard both had half-chances for Man United inside the opening four minutes, but the former headed over the crossbar before the latter volleyed wide of the post.

The first clear chance fell to West Ham in the sixth minute when Carroll slid a pass through to Emmanuel Emenike, but the on-loan striker placed his effort just wide of the far post.

Carroll's physical threat almost brought the Hammers the lead in the 10th minute when Aaron Cresswell picked out the big striker with a cross from the left, but his header flew over the crossbar as the visitors grew in confidence.

Cresswell's delivery again set up a chance for Emenike in the 18th minute, but the striker headed straight at David de Gea, before Ander Herrera had a volley deflected just wide down the other end.

Herrera again came close for Man United in the 28th minute after meeting a low cross from Marcos Rojo, but the Spaniard ballooned his effort into the stands as it remained 0-0 in a very even quarter-final.

Man United failed to clear a set piece late in the half as Michail Antonio came close for the visitors, but the first 45 minutes ended with the two teams level, although the home side edged it in terms of possession and attempts.

It took until the 57th minute for either team to register a shot on target in the second period. That particular effort came from Herrera, but the midfielder's free kick was always comfortable for Darren Randolph.

West Ham just could not keep the ball as the hour mark approached, and the home side had a big penalty shout when Reid seemed to block Herrera's shot with his arms, but the referee was not interested.

The visitors had a penalty shout of their own in the 64th minute when Payet went down under a challenge from Rojo, but the referee once again said no, much to the frustration of the West Ham fans.

Payet sent the Hammers into a 68th-minute lead, however, when the Frenchman curled a free kick past De Gea from all of 30 yards to silence Old Trafford, but for the pocket of away supporters.

Van Gaal introduced both Memphis Depay and Bastian Schweinsteiger in the 76th minute in a bid to turn the tide and the former had a shooting chance 12 minutes from time, but his effort was high and wide.

The response from Man United was strong, however, and they were deservedly level in the 83rd minute when Martial turned a Herrera cross past Randolph from inside the box.

Memphis set up Rojo inside the West Ham box as Man United came close to a second in the 85th minute, but the left-back curled over the crossbar during a period of sustained pressure from Van Gaal's side.

Carrick also came close for the Red Devils late on, but his low attempt was wide of the post. Down the other end, Antonio almost won it for the visitors, but De Gea saved as the quarter-final headed for a replay to ascertain who will join Crystal Palace, Everton and Watford in the semi-finals.
