Michael Carrick heaps praise on Man United teammate David de Gea after FA Cup win

Carrick full of praise for De Gea

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has heaped praise on teammate David de Gea after the goalkeeper again came to the Red Devils' rescue in tonight's FA Cup quarter-final win at West Ham United.

Second-half goals from Marcus Rashford and Marouane Fellaini put Man Utd in pole position to advance, but James Tomkins's 78th-minute header gave the hosts hope of sending the match to extra time.

The Hammers piled on the pressure, but De Gea kept them out, making one crucial late double-save to ensure it was the Red Devils going through.

"[De Gea] has been unbelievable for us for so long now," Carrick told BBC Sport. "We needed him at the end. The goal gave them incentive. We defended well at times but David stepped up.

"We have had some terrific results and some bad ones. That's something we have tried to put right. We need to be consistent and that's the challenge we have to set ourselves."

Carrick is now looking ahead to facing Everton at Wembley in the semi-finals later this month.

"It was massive," he added. "A great opportunity for us to get to Wembley. West Ham are flying and it's a tough place to come. We believed we would come here and win and we have done that."

United will equal Arsenal's record of 12 FA Cup wins if they go on to win the competition.
