France's Didier Deschamps explains why Anthony Martial was barely used at Euros

France boss Didier Deschamps reveals that Anthony Martial did not play regularly at Euro 2016 because he was "exhausted".

France boss Didier Deschamps has revealed that Anthony Martial did not play regularly during the European Championships because the Manchester United striker was "exhausted".

The 20-year-old, who scored 11 goals in 31 appearances for United last season, clocked up just 69 minutes of action across three matches at the Euros in France.

Martial showed on Thursday night what his nation missed by scoring in the team's 3-1 win over Italy in an international friendly.

"I spoke with Anthony about this Euros," Deschamps told reporters. "He arrived there exhausted because he had a very long season. He's a young player, he has to go through moments like that.

"He was expecting more from the Euros and me too, but the things were more difficult. He has to learn from this to progress. But as I said to him, I didn't forget what he did and what he is able to do. Now he begins a new season."

Martial has started all three of United's Premier League games this season under new manager Jose Mourinho.
