Steve Evans: 'Scott Wootton distraught after own goal'

Leeds boss Steve Evans reveals that Scott Wootton was "distraught" and apologised to the club's players and staff after his own goal saw them knocked out of the FA Cup.

Leeds United manager Steve Evans has revealed that Scott Wootton was "distraught" after his own goal saw the club knocked out of the FA Cup this afternoon.

Wootton turn the ball into his own net when trying to clear a cross at the back post, and that proved to be the only goal of the game at Vicarage Road as Premier League side Watford ran out 1-0 winners.

Evans admitted that it was a mistake that cost his side the game, but refused to criticise the defender for the calamitous error.

"He was distraught on the pitch and he was standing by the door shaking hands and apologising to every player and member of staff," Evans told reporters.

"There is nothing that anyone can say to Scott Wootton that will make that kid sleep for a day or two, so I really feel for him.

"If he gets that 100 times, he deals with it 99. It is a mistake, an error and no player in the world goes to do that, but I don't think you need a shout there. He should deal with it. It's a particularly cruel way to go out."

Leeds will now turn their attention back to the Championship, with a home clash against Fulham coming up on Tuesday.
