Lingard makes England debut

Jesse Lingard has been handed his England debut as Gareth Southgate names his XI to face Malta at Wembley this evening.

Daniel Sturridge will lead the line for the Three Lions, while Manchester United winger Lingard slots into a five-man midfield alongside Wayne Rooney, Jordan Henderson and Dele Alli.

Theo Walcott is also back in the England XI for the first time since October 2015, with the likes of Raheem Sterling and Adam Lallana absent through injury.

Ryan Bertrand comes in for the injured Danny Rose at left-back, while Gary Cahill has overcome a late fitness test to partner John Stones in the heart of the defence.

Jamie Vardy, Marcus Rashford, Eric Dier and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all start the game on the substitutes' bench.

England: Hart; Walker, Cahill, Stones, Bertrand; Henderson, Rooney, Lingard, Alli, Walcott; Sturridge Subs: Smalling, Forster, Rose, Dier, Keane, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Antonio, Vardy, Rashford, Townsend, Heaton

Malta: Hogg; Borg, Z.Muscat, Agius, Camilleri, A.Muscat; Kristensen, Sciberras, Fenech; Effiong, Schembri
