John Stones: Sam Allardyce exit "a shock"

England centre-back John Stones has admitted that he was left shocked after Sam Allardyce lost his job for being caught out by a media sting.

The 61-year-old was let go by the Football Association after just one game in charge, a 1-0 victory over Slovakia that saw Stones, 22, earn his 11th England cap.

"It was a shock about Sam," Stones told The Sunday Times. "I enjoyed working under Sam. I was looking forward to working with him more.

"When I played [against Slovakia], I thoroughly enjoyed the week-and-a-bit we spent together.

"Sam was excited to work with all the boys. It was a relief as well when we got the win, we were happy for everyone, him included. And after the game there was a good celebration. I'm sad to see him go and wish him all the best."

Gareth Southgate will take temporary charge of the side for their next four games, with Arsene Wenger and Eddie Howe among those in the running to take the reins permanently next year.
