Wayne Rooney echoes Roy Hodgson's 'ruthlessness' comments

England captain Wayne Rooney calls on his team to become "more ruthless" ahead of Monday's Euro 2016 last-16 clash with Iceland.

England captain Wayne Rooney has agreed with Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson that the team need to be "more ruthless" in their last-16 Euro 2016 clash with Iceland on Monday night.

Hodgson revealed at a press conference that he expects Iceland to adopt a defensive approach and has called on his side to "be a bit more ruthless" after struggling in the group stages.

That is a view shared by Rooney, who has claimed that England will struggle to make an impression in the competition unless they become "more ruthless" in the final third of the field.

"We can play teams who sit back or come at us. But we've got to be more ruthless. We have to be more ruthless and take more of our chances. If you don't, it can cost you a result. Now you have to take them," Rooney told reporters.

"We feel we are a good team. We feel can we can change our game plan to suit whoever we are playing. It's the business end of the tournament and we just have to be more ruthless.

"We have dominated games and we haven't looked like losing, which is positive. If we get an early goal against Iceland they will have to come out against us. We believe we can go to the end in this competition. If we play at our best we can give anyone a game and win."

England only managed three goals in their three Group B matches as they finished second behind Wales.
