Chicago Fire shock New York Red Bulls in five-goal thriller

Kennedy Igboananike scores twice as Chicago Fire claim a 3-2 victory over the New York Red Bulls.

Kennedy Igboananike scored twice as the Chicago Fire produced a shock by beating the New York Red Bulls 3-2 at Toyota Park.

New York were gifted the chance to break the deadlock in just the 10th minute when Jeff Larentowicz pulled down Matt Miazga while marking him at a corner, which allowed Sacha Kljestan to fire home from the penalty spot.

However, the hosts responded well to the early setback and pulled level midway through the first half when Gilberto found the space on the left wing to deliver a cross which was turned in by Igboananike.

Despite appearing to be on top heading into the interval, the Red Bulls were dealt another blow before the break when a cross reached Michael Stephens, who chested the ball down to allow Patrick Nyarko to send a half-volley into the bottom corner on the turn.

The visitors hit back with a clever move early in the second half as they took a corner without the Chicago defenders realising, which handed Kljestan the space to travel with the ball before Ronald Zubar converted the inviting cross.

Chicago continued to look the more dangerous of the two sides, but the Red Bulls remained on level terms after Luis Robles kept out a low strike from David Accam.

The long spells of pressure brought another reward as the game entered the closing stages when Stephens released Accam with an inch-perfect through-ball in a fine move rounded off by Igboananike, scoring his second of the night with an emphatic finish to condemn New York to a loss which leaves them five points behind Eastern Conference leaders DC United.
