Live Commentary: Bayer Leverkusen 1-1 Bayern Munich - as it happened

Relive Sports Mole's minute-by-minute coverage of the Bundesliga clash between Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich.

Bayer Leverkusen have held onto a 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich at the BayArena in the Bundesliga.

Toni Kroos put the visitors in front on 29 minutes before Sidney Sam hit back one minute later.

Bayern went top of the Bundesliga with the draw, but were perhaps unfortunate not to take all three points.

See how it unfolded below.

Well that's all from me, I hope you have enjoyed the commentary, bye for now.

Mario Gotze had a good chance at the end too, but the home side offered little up front.

Leverkusen will certainly take that point. Undeserved to be truthful, but Sami Hyypia will not be concerned by that. Bayern had big chances in the first half and had a header cleared off the line in the last few seconds. They should have won, but perhaps it was just one of those days for the European Champions.

FULL TIME: Bayer Leverkusen 1-1 Bayern Munich

CHANCE!: Schweinsteiger with a header cleared off the line in the dying seconds. What a crucial block that is as the full time whistle sounds. Breathless end to this match.

CHANCE! Oh what a chance for Gotze! He wriggled free of a marker inside the box and fired a low shot at Leno's goal but the stopper had closed the angle well.

We're into stoppage time here and Leverkusen will perhaps have expected a tougher second half, Bayern have had one or two chances but apart from Muller's header and Shaqiri's miss, they haven't looked like carving open the home side.

The Bayern number 10 is trying, and his shot is held by Leno after another dribble opened the space up for him. Perhaps he should have been brought on earlier?

Robben tries an ambitious flick over the top to Mandzukic to give him it back but the ball is too high for the Croatian striker on the edge of the box and Leno collects. Time running out for Guardiola's men.

SUBSTITUTION: Mario Gotze replaces Toni Kroos. My apologies, Mandzukic was brought on in place of Muller.

Not a lot happening at the moment, I expected Bayern to really turn the screw in the last 15 minutes, but they haven't been able to build up a head of steam as of yet.

Nine minutes of normal time left, will we have a dramatic late winner? Leverkusen have a freekick in a wide area but it is wasted with a poor delivery.

SUBSTITUTION: Robbie Kruse is brought on in place of Sidney Sam for the home side.

SUBSTITUTION: Toni Kross is replaced by Mario Mandzukic. That will see Muller drop a little bit deeper as a more traditional striker enters the field.

CHANCE!: Sam's freekick is met by Kiessling but the forward can't get enough on the header and it is held by Neuer. That was a big chance for the home side.

CHANCE!: The freekick is hit by Robeen which goes low to the keeper's right hand post. Leno does well to hold on to it.

Robeen tries to play a one-two with Schweinsteiger, but the German midfielder is fouled. Good place for a freekick for the visitors this...

Bayern emerge with the ball and Lahm and Kroos combine and play Ribery in. Leverkusen have men behind the ball though to deal with the attack.

Mario Gotze is warming up. Could the young playmaker be the deciding factor if he is introduced? Leverkusen have a rare break but their cross is well cleared. It is still possession in Bayern's final third however...

It's tentative build up from Bayern, they move it around the final third, but little is opening up. It's been backs-to-the-wall stuff for most of the game for Leverkusen, but they look ok at the minute.

SUBSTITUTION: To confirm the sub, Robben has replaced Shaqiri.

It's a positive change from Hyypia who clearly feels he can nick a winner here. Let's see how the South Korean striker gets on...

SUBSTITUTION: Emre Can is replaced by Heung-Min Son for Leverkusen. Arjen Robben looks as though he is nearing an entry on the pitch too.

Sooner or later, one of these chances will go in Bayern. Leverkusen's goal is living a charmed life at the moment.

CHANCE!: Muller with another headed chance. This time he nods it at the goal from six yards out but it hits a defender and goes out for a corner.

CHANCE!: Shaqiri should have done better after Ribery slides it along the box and Schweinsteiger's dummy leaves the Swiss with plenty of time and space on his favoured left. He misses the target.

Schweinsteiger combines with Rafinha down the right and his low cross is cleared. Bayern look for the opening across the edge of the box but the move breaks down.

Superb technique from Ribery who connects with a volley on his weaker left. He watched it all the way but it was comfortable for Leno. The winger has another shot moments later that the stopper is equal to again. Same formula both times, he was picked out by Shaqiri.

Creative play again from Shaqiri as he flicks it over his man on the edge of the box but the Swiss can't keep the volley down. In fact, it goes very very high over bar.

Kiessling and Sam combine but the former's through ball is too short and Dante calmly snuffs out the danger. Good defending.

I wonder how long Guardiola will leave it before someone is introduced? He also has Mario Mandzukic to call on.

Lovely ingenuity by Shaqiri who crosses with an overhead kick after Bender had given it away once he had tackled Ribery.

There's that high line exposure I mentioned. They're camped on the half way line and it almost bounced through for Rolfes but it is cleared up by a Bayern defender.

The resulting corner sees Dante rise highest, but his header was straight at Leno who gathers at the second attempt. It's not been the smoothest night for the keeper.

Shaqiri is brought down wide right after trying to jink his way through two challenges. Good spot for delivery this one, but the cross is too high and Leno tips out for a corner.

On seconds thoughts, Muller did have a point; his shirt was certainly tugged at. Leverkusen have escaped with that decision.

CHANCE!: Penalty shout for Bayern as Muller tries to turn after controlling a low cross from Shaqiri. He goes down and it would have been a soft one.

KICKOFF: We're off again.

He may be keen to hold on to what would be a good point against the champions. Guardiola has a wealth of options on the bench including Arjen Robben and Mario Gotze.

That brings you right up to speed with results from the Premier League. Back to Bundesliga action and I wonder I Sami Hyypia will be tempted to retreat further in the second half?

Turning our attention back to home shore for a minute, Liverpool went top of the Premier League after a comfortable 3-1 win against Crystal Palace, while Newcastle United beat Cardiff City 2-1. Fulham overcame Stoke City 1-0 at Craven Cottage as Hull City and Aston Villa played out a goalless draw at the KC Stadium. The day's earlier game saw Manchester City beat Everton 3-1 at the Etihad. You can of course, find all these respective match reports on the Sports Mole homepage.

There is another couple of games on around Europe this evening. Manchester United are continuing their poor form, losing 1-0 away to rock-bottom Sunderland. Cheivo are beating Atalanta 1-0 and Real Sociedad are drawing 0-0 with Rayo Vallecano.

I've hardly mentioned Leverkusen on commentary and that is because they have hardly had a kick. I highlighted Sam and Kiessling as dangermen for Bayern before the game, and it was their play that caused the goal, but other than that, they have had little change out of Dante and Boateng.

The result will be enough to take Bayern to the top of the league however. Guardiola will certainly take no solace from that though, his side should be winning.

Sami Hyypia must be pinching himself though. His team have had one shot on target by my maths yet find themselves level.

And there you have it! A totally dominant first half from the visitors but somehow they go in with a score-draw. Guardiola will certainly be confident of his side doing the business in the second half though. They have had chances.

HALF TIME: Bayer Leverkusen 1-1 Bayern Munich.

The threat has mainly come from the left side from Guardiola's side with Ribery and Alaba dovetailing well in parts. Particularly for the goal and Muller's miss too.

The resulting corner nearly reaches Dante, but he just can't quite get that unmistakable haircut on the end of the cross.

Bayern have been pushed back somewhat, but Shaqiri gets his side further up with a run that ends with a shot that is palmed away by Leno.

CHANCE!: How has he missed?! Muller with a header at the back post with the whole goal to aim at and he heads wide. Ribery played in Alaba with a incisive through ball and the defender put it on a plate for his teammate. Poor miss.

Well, isn't that just typical of football. No goals for half an hour, then two in a minute. Leverkusen will take this, they hadn't threatened at all until Sam grabbed the goal.

Would you believe it, Leverkusen have never looked like scoring, but Sidney Sam pops up with a tap in after Kiessling had drilled it across Neuer's front post.

GOAL! Bayer Leverkusen 1-1 Bayern Munich (Sidney Sam).

More magic from Ribery who lays in on a plate for Kroos and the youngster finishes with the instep of his left foot high into the corner. Great finish from Kroos, but Ribery is pulling all the strings here this evening.

GOAL! Bayer Leverkusen 0-1 Bayern Munich (Toni Kroos).

Dante tangles with Kiessling with the Leverkusen player coming off worse. Strong play from the Brazilian defender.

A little better from the hosts; Sam and Donati combine with the full back getting forward. However, their one-two doesn't quite come off.

A strong run from Shaqiri who puts in a good cross with his weaker right foot. The danger is cleared though. It is all Bayern at the moment. Has been for the majority.

Ribery lays it off to Kross who hits a fierce effort straight down the throat of Leno. The keeper opts to punch though.

The European Champions looked certain to score sooner or later minutes ago but their intensity has died off slightly. Not a lot happening at the moment.

Ribery at it again, with another superb dribble. This time he jinks inside and manages to get a shot off which is just wide. The Frenchman is on song here tonight.

Mesmerising stuff from Ribery. The France winger drives at the heart of the Leverkusen defence with pace, power and poise. Checks back onto his right before winning a corner. Great run.

The corner breaks to Rolfes at the back post who sends it back from where it came and the offside flag is raised.

Bayern are getting plenty of crosses in and there is an air of desperation about Leverkusen's defending. They have just broken though and have a corner.

CHANCE!: How has that stayed out! Ribery's low cross hit a defender and then Muller but it is gathered before trickling over the line by Leno. They're getting closer.

CHANCE!: Now it really should be 1-0 to Bayern. Shaqiri's cross is controlled by Muller, and he turns well but he snatches at his shot to send it wide. Big big chance for the visitors.

Bayern have a particularly high line this evening, in an attempt to pin the home side in their own half. It could prove to be a way for Leverkusen to attack with their counters though. We shall see.

CHANCE!: Kroos bears down on goal with Leno coming off his line slightly, but the German scuffs it wide and perhaps should have hit the target.

Thomas Muller handles it when trying to stoop for a header inside the box, freekick given. Danger averted for the home side. Bayern have settled into their passing routine quickly though.

Leverkusen get their first foray out of their own half and it is clear that Hyypia has them set up for a counter attacking approach this evening.

A bizarre corner from Franck Ribery sends it virtually back to the halfway line. They come again, but Dante's cross evades everyone and goes out for a throw in.

Bayern, typically, with all the possession as Leverkusen only touch it to head away attacks. Corner to Bayern...

Bayern in their unfamiliar white strip today, and a run from Alaba ends up in the full back being kicked. Rafinha wastes the resulting freekick with a terrible effort, which goes miles over.

KICK OFF: We're off and running in the BayArena.

Both teams have just emerged out of the tunnel on to the pitch at the BayArena. We're nearing the kick off.

Leverkusen were the only side to beat Bayern in last season’s Treble winning campaign, and it would be considered an upset if they were to do the same tonight, despite playing in front of their home support.

Elsehwere in the division, Mainz drew 2-2 at home to Hoffenheim, while Schalke sent Augsburg home nursing a 4-1 defeat. Stuttgart drew 1-1 with Werder and and Wolfsburg were beaten 2-0 at home to Braunschweig.

It is not just Guardiola who has talent at his disposal though of course and Sami Hyypia has Stefan Kiessling and Sidney Sam up front today. Much will be expected from the pair.

Pep Guardiola has once again selected Thomas Muller as the 'false nine' while Philipp Lahm continues in his central midfield role.

Both sides enjoyed a successful week in the Champions League of course, with Bayern's 3-1 dismantling of Manchester City at the Etihad. Leverkusen, who are in Manchester United's group of course, also saw off the threat of Real Sociedad, with a 2-1 win.

It’s always a good day at the office when you’re watching Bayern Munich, and Leverkusen are also perennially one of the strongest sides in the German league also.

Bayer Leverkusen: Leno; Donati, Toprak, Spahic, Boenisch; Reinartz, Bender, Rolfes; Sam, Kiessling

Bayern Munich: Neuer; Dante, Rafinha, Boateng, Alaba, Lahm, Schweinsteiger, Kroos; Shaqiri, Muller, Ribery

We have the team news just reaching us here, so without further ado...

A win for either side would take them top this evening, so that alone should provide ample incentive to both teams this evening. We have the makings of a very entertaining game at the BayArena here.

League leaders Borussia Dortmund will be watching this one with interest after losing 2-0 away to Borussia Monchengladbach earlier this afternoon.

Hello and welcome to Sports Mole's coverage of the Bayern Munich's clash against Bayer Leverkusen at the BayArena.
