Manchester City assistant Mikel Arteta 'agrees deal to take over at Arsenal'

Manchester City assistant Mikel Arteta reportedly agrees to become the new manager of Arsenal after being offered a contract until 2023.

Mikel Arteta has reportedly agreed to leave Manchester City in order to become the new manager of Arsenal.

After two weeks of failing to identify a priority replacement for Unai Emery, Arsenal moved at the weekend to secure a reunion with Arteta, who spent the final five years of his playing career at the Emirates Stadium.

Over the past 48 hours, negotiations are said to have been held between the Gunners and Arteta, who was regarded as a future successor to Pep Guardiola.

The Mirror claims that discussions have reached a positive conclusion, with the Spaniard ready to pen a contract until the end of the 2022-23 campaign.

The report adds that an official announcement will not be made until after Arteta has fulfilled his duties for City's EFL Cup quarter-final tie with Oxford United on Wednesday night.

If, as expected, Arteta is given the reins at Arsenal, he will begin his spell with the North London outfit against Everton - another of his former clubs - on Saturday afternoon.
