Arsene Wenger: 'Jamie Vardy will not start for England at Euro 2016'

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says that his transfer target Jamie Vardy will not start for England at Euro 2016.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has predicted that his transfer target Jamie Vardy will have to settle for a spot on the England bench at Euro 2016.

The Leicester City striker, who scored 24 Premier League goals in the Foxes' historic title-winning campaign, is one of five strikers, including Harry Kane, Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge and Marcus Rashford, in Roy Hodgson's squad in France.

Vardy has been in the headlines in recent days as he is reportedly considering a £20m move to Arsenal, but his potential new manager does not believe that the striker will be in the first XI for England.

"I don't think that Vardy will be a starter," Wenger told beIN Sports. "He has earned his place in the squad.

"I don't say this because he does not have the quality, but because he doesn't have enough experience at that level to say the whole tournament will depend on Vardy. Will he be there? Certainly.

"Football progresses always. The offence creates a new problem, the defence responds. What has happened in the last 10 years is that the strikers have become quicker and quicker. What's happened? The defence have responded by creating quicker and quicker defenders."

England's first group game is against Russia on June 11.
