Russia lose appeal against exclusion from Paralympics in Rio

Russia will not compete at the Paralympic Games in Rio after losing an appeal against exclusion following allegations of state-sponsored doping.

Russia will not compete at the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro after losing an appeal against a blanket ban.

The International Paralympic Committee announced earlier this month that the Russian Federation's 267 competitors are not eligible to compete due to the McLaren report.

Russia has been accused of a state-sponsored doping programme, which resulted in all of the nation's track and field athletes being banned from competing at the Olympics.

The Federation took their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, but they have failed to get the ban overturned, with CAS stating that the punishment is "proportionate in the circumstances".

CAS also revealed that it did not take the "natural justice rights or personality rights" of individual athletes into account when making its decision.

The International Olympic Committee opted against a blanket ban, instead leaving it up to each sport's association to make a decision regarding Russian competitors.

The Paralympics run from September 7 to 18.
