Michael van Gerwen overcomes Simon Whitlock test at World Grand Prix

Michael van Gerwen is through to the World Grand Prix semi-finals with a 3-1 victory over Simon Whitlock.

Michael van Gerwen has booked his place in the World Grand Prix semi-finals with a 3-1 victory over Simon Whitlock.

Both players had impressed in the earlier rounds and they shared the opening two sets as Whitlock suggested that he could pull off the upset.

However, the world number one went up a gear in the second half of the contest as he ended the match with an average of over 103.

The Dutchman will face Dave Chisnall in the last four after the St Helens thrower beat Northern Irishman Daryl Gurney by a 3-1 scoreline.

Gary Anderson and Raymond van Barneveld will contest the other semi-final after both came through their games on Thursday evening.

World champion Anderson recovered from a slow start to register a 3-1 win over Kim Huybrechts, while Van Barneveld continued his progress without dropping a set as he eased past Benito van de Pas.
