Phil Taylor has suffered a first-round defeat to Steve West at the World Grand Prix in Dublin.

The 11-time winner took the opening set against West but the tournament debutant stormed back to register a 2-1 victory over the Stoke-on-Trent thrower.

Michael van Gerwen was also troubled on Monday night but despite dropping the first set to Steve Beaton, he was able to reel off six successive legs to ease into the last 16.

Eighth seed Michael Smith was eliminated after losing 2-1 to Alan Norris but fellow St Helens thrower Dave Chisnall survived a slow start before getting the better of Robbie Green.

Daryl Gurney prevailed from a thriller with Mensur Suljovic as he hit a 12-darter in the final leg of the match, while Simon Whitlock and James Wilson both overturned one-set deficits to beat Joe Cullen and Mick McGowan respectively.

In the final game of the evening, fifth seed Peter Wright also exited the competition after losing 2-0 to former finalist Brendan Dolan.
