Van Gerwen focused on defending Matchplay crown

Michael van Gerwen has acknowledged that he will have to produce his best darts if he is to successfully defend his World Matchplay crown.

Since claiming the Premier League, Van Gerwen has won just one of his last five tournaments, but the world number one has suggested that he is fully focused ahead of his opening-round clash with Jamie Caven.

The 27-year-old told PDC.tv: "It was amazing to win the World Matchplay last year and a very proud moment for me because this is such a massive tournament, but this is a new event and I have to make sure I prepare properly.

"Jamie is a really good player and we've had some close matches recently so I know it will be tough, but I believe that if I can play my game I can win.

"This is a fantastic event and everyone looks forward to it. It's a wonderful place to play darts and I can't wait to get back there."

Van Gerwen and Caven have only met once in a televised tournament, which came six years ago at the Players Championship Finals.
