New Zealand post 409 runs, but they lose eight wickets to Sri Lanka on day one of the first Test in Dunedin.

New Zealand have surpassed the 400-run mark, but they lost eight wickets in the process on day one of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Dunedin.

Martin Guptill was a large contributor to the Black Caps' effort as he ended his innings with a knock of 156 off 234 balls.

The batsman managed to reach a combined 56 runs before his partner Tom Latham was caught and bowled by Suranga Lakmal for 22.

Despite losing an important wicket, Kane Williamson and Guptill were able to push on and take New Zealand past 200 runs before the former was sent packing by Nuwan Pradeep for 88.

Captain Brendon McCullum also impressed as he reached a Test half-century before falling to Milinda Siriwardana after hitting 75 runs off 57 balls.

Mitchell Santner (12), BJ Watling (5), Guptill and Tim Southee (2) all tumbled towards the end of the day, but the team managed to post a healthy total.

Doug Bracewell (32*) and Neil Wagner will return to the crease tomorrow morning with New Zealand on 409-8.
