Stuart Broad impressed by hundred from Joe Root

Broad praises Root century

Stuart Broad has called for more of his England players to follow the example set by Joe Root ahead of the one-day international series against the West Indies.

Root struggled with the bat during the disastrous tour of Australia but a century in a warm-up victory over a University of West Indies Vice Chancellor's XI should be an example of how to take responsibility in a match, according to Broad.

"It was something we lacked - players taking on responsibility," the stand-in captain, filling in for the rested Alastair Cook, told reporters.

"There was a lot of 'You didn't do that and you didn't do that' - well Rooty grabbed the bat and got a hundred. Rooty is a fantastic player. He's had a tough winter, all the players out there had a tough winter.

"It was nice to play different opposition and get ourselves ready for what's going to be a tough test against the West Indies."

The ODI series begins on Friday in Antigua.
