CM Punk has revealed that his decision to abruptly leave WWE at the start of 2014 was a "long time coming".

The former WWE champion made the controversial decision to exit the company after the Royal Rumble in January, despite having six months remaining on his lucrative deal.

Punk has largely remained silent on his exit but in his first major interview since his departure, 'The Straight-Edge superstar' has insisted that he has no regrets in ending his time with the Sports Entertainment company.

On Colt Cabana's Art of Wrestling podcast, the 36-year-old said: "I'm the fucking happiest that I've been in at least three years.

"I thought this thing that I loved, that I thought I loved, it just made me so miserable all the time. When you boil it all down, I was miserable.

"I was unhappy. Fuck it, I made myself happy. I left. It wasn't an easy decision to make, but it was also a long time coming."

Punk had spent seven-and-a-half years with WWE before his exit.
