Great Britain lose 56-44 to USA in wheelchair rugby opener

GB lose 'murderball' opener

Great Britain have recorded their first defeat in Group A of the wheelchair rugby event after losing 56-44 to the United States.

The heavily physical contest, which has been dubbed 'murderball', favoured the host nation as they snatched the first goal through captain Steve Brown.

The Brits continued their dominance over their American opponents, who came home with a gold medal in Beijing, and ended the first quarter with a goal to the good.

Despite a strong start, the US proved why they are champions by taking control of the game and snatching the lead in the second quarter.

While the efforts of GB's Aaron Phipps helped Great Britain stay in the game, it wasn't enough to pull back the score as they succumbed to defeat on the final whistle.
