Jack Burnell books Olympic spot

Jack Burnell has become the first British athlete to book their place at the Olympics next summer.

The 22-year-old came fifth in the 10km marathon at the FINA World Championships in Kazan to qualify directly for the Rio Games.

Jordan Wilimovsky claimed gold and Dutchman Ferry Weertman finished in second, while bronze medallist Spyridon Gianniotis ended the race five seconds ahead of Burnell.

"I came for a medal, but the main thing was the Olympic place," Burnell told BBC Sport.

"To be honest, something just didn't feel right today, but I know I can challenge for a medal in Rio. Hopefully this is just part of the journey to that."

Burnell's teammate Daniel Fogg finished in 14th place and is now unable to qualify for the 10km in Rio.
