Proud misses out in 50m freestyle final

British swimmer Ben Proud had to settle for eighth in a closely-fought 50m freestyle final at the World Swimming Championships in Kazan this afternoon.

The 20-year-old, who won the same event at last year's Commonwealth Games, posted the slowest time in the final, but was just 0.49s off a spot on the podium.

France's Florent Manaudou secured the gold, posting a time of 21.19s to finish almost 0.4s ahead of nearest rival Nathan Adrian of America.

Brazil's Bruno Fratus clinched the final spot on the podium, finishing just 0.01s in front of Russia's Vladimir Morozov.
