Great Britain's Ben Proud books place in 50m freestyle semi-finals at Worlds

Proud books 50m freestyle semis spot

Great Britain's Ben Proud is on course to compete for a World Championship medal after qualifying for the 50m freestyle semi-finals.

The 20-year-old, who won Commonwealth gold in this event last year, touched the wall just 0.10 of a second behind Italy's Marco Orsi to finish heat 10 in 22.13s.

In the final heat, Olympic champion Florent Manaudou of France surged ahead of the field before easing up to finish first in 21.71s, which is the fastest time overall.

Proud will head into tonight's semi-finals as the seventh-fastest swimmer in the pack.
