Live Commentary: Olympic swimming - day three as it happened

Sports Mole brings you live updates from day three of the Olympic swimming.

Good morning and welcome to Sports Mole's live coverage of day three of the Olympic swimming.

There are plenty of talking points from yesterday's pool action. World and European records tumbled, and Great Britain's Rebecca Adlington earned bronze in the women's 400m freestyle.

Coming up this morning, we have the heats of the women's 200m freestyle, men's 200m butterfly, and women's 200m individual medley.

There are four gold medals up for grabs this evening, with Team GB's Liam Tancock and Gemma Spofforth going for 100m backstroke glory in the men's and women's, respectively. Robbie Renwick is also in action in the men's 200m freestyle.

Please note that the heats get under way at 10.00am.

21.24And that concludes are live coverage of today's swimming. Thanks for reading. Join us tomorrow for all the action from day four!

21.23You can read our final report of the evening here - a round-up of the women's 200m individual medley.

21.14But the good news for Team GB is that Miley is in the final as the seventh-fastest qualifier.

21.12Ye sets a new Olympic record time of 2:08.39 and secures a place in the final. It was a blisteringly fast heat with five making the final.

21.09World record breaker Shiwen Ye is in this second heat. Much has been made of her turning in a faster time than the USA's Ryan Lochte, so she's one to watch for sure.

21.06Miley comes in second behind Katinka Hosszu of Hungary. She came in at 2:10.89. That all but guarantees her a spot in the final!

21.03She's up in the first heat. Will we see a smiley Miley at the end of the night?

21.01Last but not least tonight is the women's 200m individual medley semi-final. Set forward Hannah Miley.

21.00So Phelps, Matsuda, Le Clos and Clary all progress to the last eight. Read our report here.

20.48Phelps wins it with a time of 1:54.53.

20.44Phelps is in action now. He gets quite the reception from the crowd!

20.42Clary could only manage fourth in the first semi-final there. Takeshi Matsuda of Japan wins it, with Chad le Clos of South Africa in second.

20.39There's something of a rivalry between Phelps and Tyler Clary in this one. Clary once insinuated that Phelps does not pull his weight in training, causing some controversy.

20.38Two semi-finals to go this evening. The first is the men's 200m butterfly, a mouthwatering contest involving heavyweights Phelps and Cseh.

20.34So there you have it. Lithuania have their first ever gold medal in a swimming event. Rebecca Soni took sliver for USA, and Satomi Suzuki of Japan claimed silver. Read a report here.

20.24Amazing stuff! It's a gold for Lithuania!

20.23Meilutyte has a great shot at gold!

20.22She'll have to compose herself all over again now.

20.21Larson goes too soon, and proceedings are disrupted. The starting machine went off by mistake and she was first to react.

20.15It's the women's 100 breaststroke next. US duo Rebecca Soni and Breeja Larson are among the favourites to win this, but it's Meilutyte of Lithuania that we're looking forward to seeing.

20.13Nick Thoman of the US took silver in that event, and Ryosuke Irie of Japan secured bronze. Read our report here.

20.02No medal for Tancock unfortunately. He takes fifth place, while Matthew Grevers of the US takes gold.

19.59Liam Tancock is up in the men's 100m backstroke now. Do us proud, Liam!

19.57Emily Seebohm takes silver for Australia and Aya Terakawa claims bronze for Japan.

19.55Gemma Spofforth has just put in a strong swim in the women's 100 backstroke, but can only manage fifth. The gold goes to Missy Franklin of the USA.

19.54Taehwan Park of South Korea and Yang Sun of China are tied in silver.

19.53The first gold medal of the evening goes to Yannick Agnel of France in the men's 200m freestyle!

19.41McClatchey is into the final with the sixth-fastest time

19.40What a great swim from McClatchey! She comes in second behind world champion Pellegrini! That should see her into the final!

19.36There could be cause for double celebration for her tonight. She's Liam Tancock's Mrs.

19.36McClatchey is in lane six in the second semi-final.

19.33Bronte Barratt of Australia wins the heat, Schmitt is second, and Camille Muffat of France is in third.

19.31Allison Schmitt of the US is one to watch in this first heat. She was the fastest qualifier with a time of 1:57.33.

19.30The women's 200m freestyle semi-finals are about to commence. Mcclatchey is in the second heat.

19.22Nevertheless, we feel that Tancock has at least a bronze in him, and maybe more!

19.20Matthew Grevers of the USA will prove tough to beat in that event, as will Camille Lacourt of France.

19.17So who is Britain's best hope for a medal this evening? We'd say Liam Tancock. He may be more at home swimming 50m, but he's proven that he's more than competent across twice that distance.

19.12Elsewhere, we implore you to check out 15-year-old sensation Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania in the women's 100m breaststroke. She moves like a torpedo!

19.10Looking further ahead, Hannah Miley will attempt to book a place in the women's 200m individual medley.

19.07And let's not forget Caitlin Mcclatchey, who put in an impressive swim to make it through the heats of the women's 200m freestyle. She's up first in the semi-finals of the event.

19.04Then there's Robbie Renwick, who is in for a tough test against the likes of Ryan Lochte and Yang Sun in the men's 200m freestyle.

19.03Liam Tancock is targeting gold in the men's 100m backstroke after impressing during the semi-finals, while Gemma Spofforth takes to the pool in the women's equivalent.

19.01There are four medals up for grabs tonight and Team GB are competing on three fronts!

19.00Good evening and welcome back to Sports Mole's live coverage of day three of the Olympic swimming.

11.18We'll be back from 7.00pm this evening to bring you all of the action from the semi-finals and finals. Do join us then.

11.14And that concludes the morning's sessions. To recap, Team GB's Caitlin McClatchey and Hannah Miley have secured semi-final spots, as has US favourite Michael Phelps.

10.59Shiwen Ye of China wins it, and is not far off a world record. Miley comes in fourth but should be through to the semis.

10.56The final heat is surely the most anticipated. Great Britain's Hannah Miley is in lane three.

10.55Coutts comes in a surprise third, but it was a fast heat. Caitlin Leverenz of the USA wins it. Allen comes fifth and is likely to bow out.

10.52Sophie Allen of Team GB is up in the next heat, but Australia's Alicia Coutts is the firm favourite to take this one.

10.52Mireia Belmonte Garcia of Spain wins it after strong breaststroke and freestyle lengths.

10.50We're in to the first of the seeded heats in the women's 200m individual medley now.

10.50We're in to the first of the seeded heats in the women's 200m individual medley now.

10.40Phelps qualifies for the semi-finals in an overall fifth.

10.38No! He comes in third behind compatriot Tyler Clary and winner Dinko Jukic of Austria. Pavoni comes seventh and is almost certainly out.

10.38Phelps is in decent sprinting form and looks on course for a win.

10.36Interesting heat coming up. We've got Phelps in lane four, and Roberto Pavoni of Team GB in seven.

10.35Takeshi Matsuda of Japan wins the fourth heat, with Laszlo Cseh of Hungary in second. Both will almost certainly qualify.

10.31It wasn't a great one for Robuck in seventh. Velimir Stjepanovic of Serbia wins it, edging out second-placed Chad le Clos of South Africa.

10.29The favourite in the first of the seeded heats is Peng Wu of China, who could pose a threat to Phelps.

10.28In the third heat we have Joe Roebuck of Great Britain. Give 'em hell, Joe!

10.27The men's 200m butterfly is up now, and we're into the unseeded heats. A certain Michael Phelps is up shortly.

10.17An impressive swim for Alison Schmitt of the USA sees her win the final heat and guarantee her place in the next phase.

10.15The final heat is under way.

10.14The hot favourite Muffat of France came in third, but she looked out of sorts. Perhaps yesterday's antics have taken their toll.

10.13Fantastic performance by Mcclatchey! She wins the heat with 1:58.03. That should see her through!

10.12Shijia Wang of China - a relative unknown - leads at the halfway point.

10.11Can Caitlin Mcclatchey do better in the penultimate heat? We're about to find out.

10.10Pellegrini wins it after a sluggish start, with Franklin in second. Turner comes in sixth and is unlikely to make the next stage.

10.09American Missy Frankin leads at the halfway stage.

10.08Here comes Team GB's Rebecca Turner in heat three.

10.06And she comes second to Pernille Blume of Denmark after a slow first 100m. Grainne Murphy of Ireland withdrew from that heat, but we aren't sure why as of yet.

10.04Here comes heat two of five. We have 2004 Olympic champion Camelia Potec of Romania in this.

10.02Natthanan Junkrajang wins the first heat with a time of 2:02.49.

10.01The first of the unseeded heats has commenced.

10.00Disappointing to see yet more empty seats at the Aquatics Centre this morning. The matter should really be investigated.

9.55The women's 200m freestyle heats will be under way momentarily.

9.51We wouldn't bet against any of those progressing, but there's certainly room for at least one of the Team GB duo to join them.

9.47We have to admit, the competition is sky high in this one. We have Camille Muffat of France, Missy Franklin of the USA, and Italy's Federica Pellegrini all battling for a spot in the semi-finals.

9.45Rebecca Turner and Caitlin Mcclatchey are both seeded in the event. Let's hope they are inspired by Rebecca Adlington's medal-winning feat yesterday.

9.43Good morning and welcome to our live coverage of day three of the Olympic swimming. Up first today is the women's 200m freestyle, and we have two Team GB hopefuls in that.
