Russian swimmers want 4x200m freestyle world record

Russians want relay world record

Russia's gold medal-winning 4x200m freestyle relay team have revealed that their next target is breaking the world record for the event.

The quartet set a new Russian junior record with a time of 7:16.08 to beat Great Britain to the gold at the European Games earlier today.

Ernest Maksumov swam the penultimate leg of the race, and told reporters that he was surprised they had broken the Russian record.

"We didn't know that. I'm surprised. We want to break the American [senior] world record," he said.

An American team including Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps set the current record at the World Championships in 2009 in a time of 6:58.55.
