Defending champion Liam Tancock has won the gold medal in the 50m backstroke at the World Championships in Shanghai.

Retaining the title he won in Rome two years ago, Tancock's victory yielded his fifth medal in World Championship events.

Tancock, who clocked a time of 24.50 seconds, beat off the challenge from France's Camille Lacourt and South Africa's Gerhard Zandberg who, took silver and bronze respectively.

The 26-year-old's success represents Great Britain's second gold of the weekend, following Rebecca Adlington's win in the 800m freestyle yesterday.
