Parkinson fails in world title bid

Australian surfer Joel Parkinson has been booted out of the race for the world title after getting beaten in the Moche Rip Curl Pro in Portugal.

At the weekend, the world number four was knocked out in the third round by fellow Australian Adam Melling.

Parkinson, who won the championship in 2012, scored 7.93, but Melling moved on top with a points total of 11.66.

Meanwhile, Kelly Slater and Gabriel Medina were also knocked out of the penultimate world tour event in Portugal.
