A former Southampton youth coach accused of sexual abuse by six players was reportedly not police checked before taking on another coaching position elsewhere.

A former Southampton youth coach embroiled in the football sex abuse scandal was reportedly not police checked for a later coaching job.

Bob Higgins was accused of abusing boys in the 1980s, which he was cleared of in 1992, but six ex-Saints players have since come forward with allegations.

According to BBC Sport, Higgins later took on a job with Fleet Town FC but was not police checked when taking on the role in 2012.

The club have now confirmed that he is no longer involved and was working on an "unpaid basis", though chairman Steve Cantle revealed that no notification had been given by either the Football Association or the police about previous allegations.

FA rules state that anyone working with children or young people in the game must complete enhanced background checks.
