Brazilian police arrest 10 people over alleged Olympic terror plots

Brazilian police arrest 10 people over suspected plans to carry out terrorist attacks during next month's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Brazilian police have arrested 10 people suspected to have been planning terrorist attacks at next month's Olympic Games.

All of the people arrested were Brazilian and are not thought to be members of Islamic State, although officials said that they had tried to make contact with the group.

The justice minister Alexandre Moraes revealed that the group were in the planning stage of carrying out an attack, but described those involved as "absolute amateurs" and "ill-prepared" to have successfully gone through with it.

The suspects had been in contact via messaging services such as Whatsapp and were arrested across 10 different states just two weeks before the Games are due to get underway.

More than 80,000 police and soldiers will be on duty in Rio during the Olympics, which run from August 5 to August 21.
