David Weir: 'Armed forces are real heroes, not Paralympians'

Weir pays tribute to armed forces

Paralympic champion David Weir has insisted that members of the armed forces deserve to be regarded as 'real heroes' over himself and his fellow athletes.

The 33-year-old wheelchair sprinter, who won four gold medals at the London 2012 Olympic Games, was awarded a CBE from the Queen following his success last summer.

"I never dreamed I would get a CBE," the Daily Star quotes Weir as saying. "But I think other people deserve it more than me.

"If you look at the guys who fight for our country, they are more heroic than us Paralympians. I'm not knocking it but we are only doing a sport we love."

Weir picked up his honour at Buckingham Palace earlier this month.
