Robert Thornton: 'Glasgow bin lorry tragedy is heartbreaking'

Robert Thornton insists that darts takes a back seat following the recent tragic events in Glasgow which claimed the lives of six people.

Scottish darts star Robert Thornton has admitted that he has been left feeling numb following recent tragic events in Glasgow.

An out-of-control bin lorry claimed the lives of six people in the Scottish city last Monday, which has united the nation as one over the last few days.

Ahead of his second-round meeting with Ronnie Baxter at the PDC World Championship at Alexandra Palace, Thornton told the Daily Record: "For something like that to happen at this time of the year is so sad. It seems to have happened more than once at this time of year.

"Families are turned into turmoil at a time when they should be together and happy. My grandweans were up in Glasgow 48 hours before the accident happened. Two days before. You can't help but think about that.

"There will be presents there that did not get opened on Christmas Day and it breaks your heart. Other things that go on in life just don't matter at times like this."

The showpiece tournament in the darts calendar resumes tomorrow afternoon.
