Sports Personality of the Year panel includes Sir Steve Redgrave

The BBC have announced that Sir Steve Redgrave, Denise Lewis and Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson will be on the panel to decide the Sports Personality of the Year nominees.

The trio will be joined by the chair of UK Sport Baroness Campbell as well as representatives from newspapers and the BBC to make a shortlist of 12 nominees for the award.

In a summer that witnessed Bradley Wiggins win the Tour de France, Andy Murray clinch his first Grand Slam title at the US Open and a number of British Olympic and Paralympic athletes - including Mo Farah, Jessica Ennis, Jonnie Peacock and Ellie Simmonds - storm to gold medals at the London 2012 Games, the contest is expected to be tight.

The BBC One show, which will be held at the ExCel Arena in London on December 16, will be hosted by Gary Lineker, Sue Barker and Clare Balding.
