Real Madrid and Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo beats Lionel Messi and David Beckham to become the first sportsman to reach 50m 'likes' on social networking site Facebook.

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo has become the first sportsman to reach the landmark of 50m 'likes' on social networking site Facebook.

Ronaldo tops a list dominated by footballers, beating off close competition from arch rival Lionel Messi, who has to settle for second place.

The Barcelona striker trails Ronaldo by over 10m in the list, with David Beckham coming in a close third place.

Madrid teammate Kaka enters in fourth, while Messi's chief creator Andres Iniesta does enough to place seventh with 10m likes.

Basketball stars LeBron James (fifth), Michael Jordan (sixth) and Dwayne Wade (eighth) represent the NBA in the rankings.

Indian cricket star Sachin Tendulkar and WWE wrestler John Cena complete the top ten, finishing ninth and tenth respectively.

Ronaldo is enjoying a week of personal accolades as he gears up to make his 100th international appearance against Northern Ireland on Tuesday.
