Psychiatrist: 'Oscar Pistorius has anxiety disorder'

A psychiatrist who has been giving evidence at the Oscar Pistorius murder trial has said that the athlete has suffered from an anxiety disorder since childhood.

The Paralympic star fatally shot girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day last year, but denied murdering the model, claiming that he mistook her for an intruder.

Meryl Vorster told the court that the 27-year-old has been anxious about violent crime since childhood and that his actions should be viewed "in context of his anxiety".

She added: "He feels guilty and has developed a depressive disorder as a result. I think the generalised anxiety is relevant to the case. But the court will have to decide."

The trial, which got underway in March, is due to finish hearing evidence this week.
