Oscar Pistorius to appeal murder conviction at constitutional court

Six-time Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius confirms his intention to appeal his murder conviction in South Africa's constitutional court.

Oscar Pistorius has announced that he will appeal his murder conviction in South Africa's constitutional court.

The six-time Paralympic champion's defence lawyer Barry Roux told the High Court in Pretoria that his client will challenge the conviction, which was upgraded from culpable homicide (manslaughter) last week.

Roux confirmed during a bail hearing in the South African city that Pistorius will lodge an appeal, meaning that the double amputee can only be sentenced once that process has concluded.

Pistorius spent less than 12 months in jail before being transferred to house arrest at his uncle's luxury home in Pretoria after initially being sentenced to five years' imprisonment in 2014.

Now, though, the athlete faces a minimum of 15 years in jail after the Supreme Court ruled that he is guilty of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, whom he shot dead through a toilet door at his home in the early hours of Valentine's Day in 2013.
