Paralympian Oscar Pistorius in court for sentencing on murder conviction

Six-time Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius arrives at the High Court in Pretoria to be sentenced for murder.

Six-time Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius has arrived at the High Court in Pretoria to begin sentencing for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

The 29-year-old, who faces a 15-year jail term, is expected to learn his fate within the next five days.

Pistorius was originally sentenced to five years behind bars after being found guilty of culpable homicide (manslaughter), but his conviction was upgraded to murder in December.

The double amputee was released from prison in October 2015 after serving less than a year in incarceration, and was then given the green light to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest at his uncle's property.

The length of Pistorius's sentence could be less than 15 years due to the time that he has already spent in jail, as well as mitigating circumstances, including disability, good behaviour and his mental state.

The sportsman killed Steenkamp by firing four gunshots through a toilet door at his home in Pretoria in the early hours of Valentine's Day in 2013.

Pistorius has maintained that he mistook his girlfriend for an intruder.
