Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius arrives at Pretoria Magistrates' Court on a murder charge of allegedly shooting dead his girlfriend.

Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius has arrived at Pretoria Magistrates' Court to be formally charged with murdering his girlfriend at his home in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The 26-year-old is alleged to have shot dead 30-year-old model Reeva Steenkamp in the head and the upper body at his home on the secure complex of Silver Lakes estate.

The double amputee's lawyers are expected to lodge an application for bail but South African police confirmed yesterday that they will oppose the request.

Pistorius was led to the waiting police car travelling to the court with his jacket covering his face in order to prevent photographers from capturing him.
