Andy Murray's grandmother "thrilled" by his engagement

Murray's gran delighted by engagement

The grandmother of tennis star Andy Murray has expressed her joy following the news that the Scotsman is engaged to girlfriend Kim Sears.

The two-time Grand Slam winner proposed to his partner of nine years last Wednesday and was quick to inform his gran Shirley Erskine, who lives in Dunblane.

"We're delighted," the Daily Mail quotes Mrs Erskine as saying. "Kim is a lovely girl. Andy phoned and said 'just to tell you, I proposed to Kim today'. His grandpa Roy and I were thrilled.

"Roy told him 'I hope she said yes'. I asked, 'can I give my congratulations to Kim', and he said 'she's right here'. He passed the phone to Kim.

"She was very excited - we all were. I'm told it's a lovely ring. Kim has been such a great support to Andy through all his highs and lows. We couldn't be happier for them both."

The couple met at the US Open back in 2005.
