Judge Thokozile Masipa adjourns Oscar Pistorius appeal decision until Wednesday

Judge delays Pistorius appeal decision

Judge Thokozile Masipa has decided to adjourn until Wednesday her ruling on whether Oscar Pistorius's five-year sentence for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp can be appealed against.

State prosecutors and Pistorius's lawyers returned to court in Pretoria, South Africa this morning to discuss the appeal.

The six-time Paralympic champion was jailed in October after being found guilty of the culpable homicide of Steenkamp, whom he claimed he mistook for an intruder when he fired four gunshots through a toilet door at his home in the early hours of Valentine's Day last year.

Prosecutors, who plan to challenge the judge's decision to acquit Pistorius of murder, told the court today that the sentence was "shockingly light", while the athlete's lawyers claimed that the original ruling was appropriate.

Judge Masipa told the court that the prosecution will discover tomorrow if they can lodge an appeal.

Pistorius was not in court for the hearing.
