A study by FIFpro has revealed that former and current footballers suffer more mental health issues than the general public.
A questionnaire carried out by the World Players' Union found that 38% of current professionals and 35% of retired footballers have dealt with symptoms of depression and anxiety.
It has also been revealed that players who are still in the game and have suffered three or more serious injuries are four times more likely to report mental health issues.
"This awareness might allow the early treatment of such health conditions," BBC Sport quotes FIFpro's Vincent Gouttabarge as saying.
Half of the 826 who took part in the survey currently play or used to play at the highest level in their country.
