Football League clubs back safe standing areas

The majority of the 72 Football League clubs have given their backing to the introduction of safe standing areas at Championship grounds.

The majority of the 72 Football League clubs have voted in favour of safe standing areas being introduced at Championship grounds.

Rules that football grounds have to be all-seater were implemented in the Premier League and the second tier following an inquiry into the 1989 Hillsborough disaster.

Ninety-six Liverpool fans died as a result of a crush in one of the stands at Sheffield Wednesday's stadium during an FA Cup clash against Nottingham Forest.

However, safe standing areas including retractable seats have been given the thumbs-up by a number of Football League clubs at a meeting today, according to Sky Sports News.

Standing sections have proved to be successful in grounds around Europe, most notably in Germany.
