Ched Evans rape appeal date set

The date for Ched Evans's appeal against his rape conviction is set for March 22.

Ched Evans will have an appeal against his rape conviction heard on Tuesday, March 22, it has been confirmed.

In 2012 the former Sheffield United striker was found guilty of raping a 19-year-old girl at a hotel near Rhyl and sentenced to five years in prison.

Evans - a Wales international - has continued to protest his innocence since the allegations first surfaced, admitting to intercourse with the accuser but denying that it was non-consensual.

Following his release from prison last year, Evans's lawyers presented fresh evidence to the Criminal Cases Review Commission, who have now referred the case to the Court of Appeal.

Attempts by Evans to resume his footballing career with the Blades and Oldham Athletic failed after protests from outraged fans.
