Brazil superfan Clovis Acosta Fernandes loses battle with cancer

Brazil superfan Clovis Acosta Fernandes passes away at the age of 60 following a reported nine-year battle with cancer.

Brazil superfan Clovis Acosta Fernandes has died at the age of 60 following a long battle with cancer.

The supporter, who attended every World Cup from 1990, was regularly photographed when Brazil were in action.

Fernandes's tear-stained face following Brazil's shocking 7-1 defeat to Germany in the semi-finals of last year's World Cup went viral.

The FIFA World Cup's official Instagram page wrote: "Football today lost one of its most symbolic all-time supporters. Innumerable fans snapped selfies with the good-natured Gaucho during Brazil 2014, while the sight of him crying during the Selecao's semi-final defeat was one of the most iconic images of the tournament. We'll miss you, Clovis."

Reports have claimed that Fernandes battled cancer for nine years, but succumbed to the disease in a Porto Alegre hospital this week.
