Bookies pay out £5m for Ryder Cup triumph

Bookies were forced to shelve out a record £5m after Europe retained the Ryder Cup in dramatic fashion in Medinah, Chicago over the weekend.

Jose Maria Olazabal's men clinched the elusive trophy after launching a comeback on the final day of the contest despite finishing day two 10-6 down to the USA.

Europe were 33/1 to win at 8.20pm on Sunday, while the USA were favourites with 1/50, and following the shock turnaround Ladbrokes paid out £650,000 to punters.

Tiger Woods missed a vital putt on the 18th hole to level the scoreline for the Americans.
