Ex-Wales rugby star Ian Gough wins appeal against assaulting ex-girlfriend

Former Wales rugby player Ian Gough wins his appeal against a charge of assaulting his ex-girlfriend Sophia Cahill.

Former Wales rugby international Ian Gough has been cleared of assaulting his ex-girlfriend Sophia Cahill after winning his appeal at Croydon Crown Court.

In July last year at Croydon Magistrates' Court, the Newport Gwent Dragons lock was found guilty of grabbing and pushing Cahill at her home during an incident on January 5, 2014.

Gough was ordered to pay £2,130 in fines and costs but decided to lodge an appeal, and after two days of previously unheard evidence, Mr Recorder Jonathan Davies has allowed the appeal.

According to BBC News, Mr Recorder Davies said: "In these circumstances we have both decided that there is no reasonable prospect of our convicting him of this. I don't think that the evidence in this case is enough to convict the appellant. In these circumstances I allow the appeal."

Cahill, who is a former Miss Wales, was not present during the verdict.
