Irving Fryar sentenced to five years in jail

Former New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins wide receiver Irving Fryar is sentenced to five years in jail.

Former NFL wide receiver Irving Fryar has been sentenced to five years in jail for his part in a mortgage scam.

The 53-year-old was convicted of applying for multiple mortgage loans in quick succession while using the same property as collateral in August alongside his mother Allene McGhee, who has been given three years' probation.

"The fact that Fryar had the means to succeed and do good things and instead chose this criminal path makes his actions all the more reprehensible," acting New Jersey attorney general John Hoffman said in a statement on Friday.

Fryar was a first-round draft pick for the New England Patriots in 1984, and also went on to play for the Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins in a 16-year NFL career.

A five-time Pro Bowler, Fryar made 84 touchdowns before retiring in 2000.
